Sketches of Light
Alexander’s debut album, Sketches of Light, is a collection of twelve tracks for solo piano. They were composed over a seven year period and completed after Alexander moved, at the age of nineteen, to the north coast of Scotland. Alexander released the collection in 2013 when it was chosen by ClassicFM as their Drive-time Album of the Week. The album, popular with the station’s audience, has been featured on almost every programme. Decca Records re-released the album in 2014 and the music has been aired widely across TV and radio.
ClassicFM described the music as having ‘an emotional resonance that deserves repeated listening.’ Positive News, while trying to identify the genre of the album, concluded that it’s not ‘classical, jazz or improvised, but a glimpse of something new.’
Alexander sketched dozens of picture for the release (including the album cover). He used some of them to make videos to accompany the music, such as ‘Light in the Storm’ - a story about ‘a tree, dark clouds and changing light.’
